Providence Medical Thornton is a medium size general practice located at Thornton a suburb of Maitland half hour up the New England Highway from Newcastle. It has been open continuously since 1985 having been started by Dr Heather Stephenson and Dr Ian McKendry and joined by Dr Alan Lightbody in 1988. Thornton is a large and growing family base suburb with a large proportion of middle aged and young parents with families. The patient base provides a diverse interesting range of medical problems.
The Practice has two premises in close location with a total of 11 clinical rooms. These are occupied by Doctors and up to 2 or 3 Nurses at any one time. The owners of the practice are Providence Medical Group.
Thornton has been involved in GP training since early 90’s and had many GP trainees pass thru its doors. The Practice is always endeavouring to provide a supportive and positive environment for GP trainees. A number of previous trainees have returned and now work as full time doctors at Providence Medical Thornton.
